04Meanwhile Lab

Memory keeps the thread of ideas that arrive as sparks.

The Lab gathers projects born from the work and from questions that, at some point, needed to become software, starting with Copal.

04.1Copal

A structure for thought that remains in motion.

An LLM is an excellent thinking partner: it understands, connects and develops. Copal adds continuity to a thought process that moves across conversations, tools and moments.

Copal preserves ideas, intentions, connections and traces of work across different models and tools. It lets something leave the foreground, preserves it and brings it back when a new question makes relevant what seemed peripheral yesterday.

It is a persistent layer that assistants can access: memory that remains while models change.

04.2The starting point

Structure follows the timing of the idea.

An idea may come from an intuition, something that happened during the day or an encounter between elements still far apart.

Each thought needs its own time to take shape.

Structure arrives over time, as a project gathers scattered ideas or a connection remains peripheral for months. Copal keeps the material alive and lets the structure evolve with the thought.

Models contribute in a particular way here: they can recognize similarities and links that remain unconscious to us, especially when the distance between two ideas exceeds what we remember in the moment.

04.3The system

Memory that outlives assistants.

As models become increasingly interchangeable, the context built over time belongs to the person who produced it.

01

Enter from anywhere

You can speak to Copal through the LLMs and agents you already use, or start from the memory itself to resume a project.

02

Let the structure evolve

Sessions, ideas and intentions remain available, allowing the structure to evolve as the work and the way you interpret it change.

03

Connect over time

The model relates what you are doing today to a forgotten trace and brings connections scattered across different conversations back into the present.

04

Keep it yours

Copal is self-hosted and open source, so memory lives on your infrastructure and carries across changing providers and models.

04.4The direction

Copal’s direction will emerge through use.

Copal begins as an open-source project, with a current role to consolidate and a direction that will take shape in the context in which it grows.

I started Copal as an open-source project, open to the people who will use it and help it evolve.

Open source is part of its DNA: if the purpose is to preserve personal continuity through technological changes that are still difficult to describe, the project must be able to change with the people who use it. We will see where we take it, or where it takes us.

Code, documentation and project status

Have a question to add to the project?

Copal is public, still in motion and open to anyone who wants to explore the code, try it or start a discussion in the repository.
